The intention behind the exercise Workshop Space is to provide an opportunity for developing and translating architectonic concepts three-dimensionally. The focus of the spatial examination remains the realization of the design at a scale of 1:1. Methods of design and work, the choice in material and color, and the manipulation of daylight and artificial light are to be conveyed. A formal, constructive, and organizational thinking process is to be stimulated, while also promoting ecological and economical considerations in the process of realizing the design. Within the framework of creative debate as a method for arriving at a coherent architectural solutions, the student will be asked to consider all aspects of spatial design, down to the scale of detailing. The exercise Workshop Space offers the student the chance to depart from the realm of theoretical design to one of direct confrontation at a large and real scale.
A design task of appropriate scale forms the course s point of departure. The teaching content will be project-dependent, based on the chosen design task. The final result will be a group effort, a realization in built form, experimental in nature and at a scale of 1:1. The course will be practice-oriented, pulling together content both from the Department of Spatial Design and from outside sources, such as invited experts, excursions, and company visits. Requirements: satisfaction in clearly defining a task, and in its materialization at a scale of 1:1, good spatial sense, a feel for the relationship between material and form, as well as the ability to perform manual skills and organize resources.
Articulating space through building is the aim of architecture. Addressing spatial interaction and generating new ideas and forms with an emphasis on their perception form, material, color, light and sound are to be subjects of investigation at a suitable scale. The Workshop Space is to be understood as a place of utopian production, an opportunity for translating coursework into three-dimensional reality at a scale of 1:1.
