Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the interplay between architectural construction and perception, and apply this knowledge to the design of spatial constructs. They will develop perceptual skills and learn to consider “immaterial constructs” in order to create a distinctive architectural expression. Students will be able to articulate their concepts both textually and graphically, as well as present and discuss them competently.

Subject of course

The seminar consists of a series of lectures as well as active research conducted by students through observations, texts, and illustrations. The aim is to carry out a systematic and innovative analysis of the relationship between architectural construction and its impact on perception. The case studies focus on spatial designs that exhibit rich resonant relationships. The emphasis is not only on formal, stylistic, or typological aspects but also on the construction itself and its perception. Students will explore these principles through methodical perceptual exercises, performative lectures, and the design of ‘perceptual constructs’.

The goal is to foster discourse on space. Special attention is given to the relationship between the act of building and the perception of space. Incorporating recent findings from cognitive sciences will help to evaluate the resonance of different buildings.

The title “Near Distance” describes the multifaceted nature of space, which can be both familiar and elusive. This ranges from general concepts of space to intensively designed secular and sacred spaces.

Teaching methods

The seminar is based on research into spatial perception, ‘resonance theory’, and ‘affordance theory’ and teaches students the knowledge and application of perception principles as well as phenomenological constructs. A deeper insight into the mental aspects of architecture is becoming increasingly relevant in the context of digitalization. Our goal is a stronger integration of design principles into the physical and social substance, allowing genuinely architectural concepts to be applied.

Additional information

It would be advantageous, though not mandatory, to combine the elective seminar with the Bachelor design course "Music Theater." The thematic overlaps allow you to effectively utilize the synergies between both courses. If you choose to enroll in both, we would appreciate it if you could briefly note this during registration.

Examination modalities

The research seminar begins with a workshop on the body in space, followed by an analytical study. The research seminar is accompanied by an extensive lecture series and includes a series of perception exercises, followed by graphic and textual analyses of study objects, leading to more general theory formation. The submission consists of a study and the creation of a well-founded article (2500-4000 words in German/English) with suitable self-created illustrations, which will be developed in consultation with the students during the semester.
