Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to write scientific papers independently. They have an overview of suitable research methods in the field of architecture and are able to formulate research questions. They have learned to develop scientific arguments and are able to articulate themselves in different text formats.

Subject of course

Access to education is not and never has been fair. While some pupils benefit from privileges, others are affected by (various) categories of discrimination. In this seminar, we want to consider together to what extent the school building, as a physical space in which children and young people spend a lot of time, can reproduce or break down discrimination.

To find out, we will apply sociological research methods in workshop settings and interview the experts of their living environment, namely the pupils themselves. We work closely with our partner schools, which we are allowed to visit 2-3 times a semester for "research visits" as required.

The results of this qualitative-empirical research project are intended to close research gaps in order to develop important aspects for the creation of a guideline for (gender-)inclusive school construction, the results of which will be communicated to the MA56 - Municipal Department for Schools, and in the best case will be taken into account in future school planning.

The scope of performance consists of regular participation in the seminar and the writing of a seminar paper of approx. 25,000 characters incl. LZ per person. The work is done in groups of two; individual work is possible in exceptional cases.

Teaching methods

In order to answer our overarching questions, we will ask pupils and teachers as experts where the architecture supports them and where there is potential for improvement. We will use qualitative field research methods to answer our research questions during school visits, some of which will last a whole day.

These include, for example, classic guided interviews with school management, teachers and pupils, mapping with children's drawings, participant observation in the classroom, photo documentation (possibly also by the children themselves), workshop offers, keeping a research diary and many more.
