Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyze and reflect on spatial requirements, develop concepts on the subject of building in existing structures and develop an independent architectural position. Issues relevant to construction and structural engineering should be integrated as an integral part of the design work.

Subject of course

As there is a glaring lack of artists' studios, workshops and low-threshold exhibition venues in Vienna, a suburban center for art production, discourse and presentation is to be designed, incorporating existing post-industrial buildings and the suburban landscape. The location between Vienna and Bratislava and the proximity to the airport also favors the holding of international symposia and the establishment of a place for art education.

The building site: The paper mill in Klein-Neusiedel, close to the runway of Schwechat airport and close to the OMV refinery, is an exceptional building site. The paper mill was opened in 1797 after 3 years of construction. The architecture of the production building was essentially determined by the production process: three waterwheels operated the paper rollers and a rolling mill for smoothing the paper, which were set up in the lowest floor wing; the huge mansard roof served as a spacious drying room for the handmade paper. The company supplied paper to the k.k. It was the parent company of the later Neusiedler AG für Papierfabrikation, which became Mondi Neusiedler GmbH (Mondi AG) in the 21st century (source Wikipedia).
For a time, the Kleinneusiedel mill was the largest paper mill in Europe. Paper production was discontinued in the 1930s. - Workshops are currently housed in the outbuildings and a variety theater in one of the halls. The late baroque main building and some of the outbuildings have not been renovated and have fallen into disrepair. The small power station on the site is in operation and produces electricity from the water power of the works canal branching off from the Fischa.

The design task: The design aims to incorporate the entire site. It is to be examined which buildings are to be renovated and supplemented, or which parts of the building are only to be secured (e.g. supporting structures) in order to make the whole area accessible and to preserve its current, wildly romantic character. As already described, studios, workshops, event facilities and temporary accommodation for seminars and artists in residence are to be designed. The surrounding landscape, in particular the overgrown park to the north of the factory, is to be incorporated.

The design task is divided into 2 phases:

Analysis + concept : Analysis of the building task : Which spaces and infrastructures are needed for art production? Programming of the site, taking into account use-neutral spaces / appropriation. Flexibility, multiple use. Which buildings should be renovated and which buildings should merely be secured? Supplementing the existing buildings with the necessary infrastructure for art production and energy generation and storage.

Environmental model, photo documentation, concept sketches, brainstorming
Design: The results of the analysis of the existing building form the basis for the design. A concept is to be developed for the entire site. Subsequently, a sub-area will be worked out in detail, focusing on construction, resource-saving use of materials, innovation and energy generation/storage. The focus of the task is the sensitive handling of post-industrial architecture and the surrounding landscape.
