BIOREGIONAL ASSEMBLY
Bioregional Assembly is developing a network of material, human and infrastructural resources in the Salzkammergut region and is looking at how these can be assembled in a way that could strengthen local ecological, economic and social systems in the future. Between March - September 2024, a series of design-research projects will facilitate collaborations with regional institutions from industry, agriculture and crafts on the development of bioregional design practices. Between July - September 2024, research and prototypes will be on public display at the former greenhouse of KunstQuartier Gmunden. Ultimately, Bioregional Assembly aims to serve as an operational model that would inform the long-term development of KunstQuartier Gmunden as a bioregional design-research hub for the Salzkammergut region. The project is lead by Jakob Travnik in dialogue with Atelier LUMA, a programme of LUMA Arles, France as part of the 2024 European Capital of Culture, Bad Ischl, Salzkammergut.
LOCAL MATERIAL and HUMAN HABITAT
The climate crisis challenges us to reconsider our way of living on the planet and our behavior towards our nature and surroundings. Our presence on Earth is intricately linked to the evolution of our human habitat. Creating our habitat in an intelligent and resilient manner implies adopting an alternative approach within our building culture. Learning from our cultural heritage could provide us with solutions for shaping our environment in a sensible way. One fundamental strategy for a new approach in architectural design is the research of available local resources and materials and their utilization to achieve sustainable design. Fostering awareness of our surroundings, getting in resonance with local resources, and sharpening our investigative art of observation are essential steps.
MATERIAL RESONANCE
Material Resonance, Salzkammergut, a design course held in Gmunden, is integrated into the Bioregional Assembly program. The project is incorporated into the context of Bad Ischl, Salzkammergut European Capital of Culture 2024. The course includes a research phase focused on identifying and mapping bioregional local materials and resources, supplemented by explorative excursions and a workshop. Part of this research phase involves materials testing of local earth regarding its properties for earth-based materials. Subsequent to the research phase, a 1-to-1 workshop is held for the practical application of the findings. With a focus on utilizing natural materials such as organic fibers and minerals, the course emphasizes investigating local resources, acquiring hands-on experience with tools, and comprehending the practical application of processed earthen materials within the workshop context. The course is instructed by experts with experience in earthen materials.
