Subject of course

Elements of living: Prefabrication as a tool for new visions of social housing in Tasmania

The housing crisis has become a global problem. Leaving the bubble of the worldwide unique practice of Viennese housing construction, we go to the other side of our planet to enter into a dialogue with a different context with our "Viennese knowledge" and to learn from each other.

The Australian government is making a huge budget of several billion euros available over the coming years to tackle the housing crisis with a very large volume of social housing. The issue of scalability plays an enormous role here. Prefabrication and modularity are key factors in making housing construction affordable again. This way of thinking about architecture has been taken to new dimensions in recent decades as a result of major technological changes. In countries with little wood and a tradition of building with the "earth", precast concrete is also gaining enormous importance in combination with new major issues of sustainability (e.g. cementless concrete, etc.).

In concrete terms, we will be working with very important players: a company that is one of the world's leading manufacturers of production plants and the production of precast concrete elements, as well as project participants and construction sites on site in Australia, in order to communicate new visions for living together through new social housing construction to the responsible ministries.

Australia has a colonial history: the English arrived in a cultural area that had been continuously inhabited for over 50,000 years by the "First Nation Persons", as the various tribes that were previously summarised under the collective term "Aborigines" are known. The resulting tragedies and conflicts continue to have an impact to the present day and also on the issue of social housing. Questions of inclusion are not only important from this perspective, but also for new marginalised social groups or the displacement of older people and young single parents due to the enormous economic pressure on the housing market.
In Australia, social housing is very often perceived as an area of conflict. With the "Viennese Knowledge" we want to start there and try to find out how we can learn from the respective context.

In addition to elements of prefabricated construction, the focus will also be on "Elements of Living", i.e. an understanding of what "living" means in a wide variety of contexts and how a combination of all these elements can be developed.
In a territory that works with very different spatial concepts, we will jointly develop new building blocks of "good social living" for the city, the suburbs, the city in between and the countryside.

The resulting typologies and prototypes will then be presented to the Ministry as visions for a different kind of social housing.

An excursion to South Tyrol focussing on "Building with precast concrete elements" will accompany the design course.

Teaching methods

Research and survey of topic-related basics: Elements of prefabricated construction / Elements of Living
Initial concepts are created based on the analysis of the topic. The design is developed on the basis of plans and models in different scales.

Additional information

An excursion (253.L07 Excursion Housing - Elements of living) to South Tyrol (IT) will be organised to accompany the design, which will provide an introduction to the process of prefabricated construction both by visiting the factory of a producer of precast concrete elements and by seeing examples built on site.
