After successful completion of the course, students are able to effectively apply conceptual and constructive thinking as well as refined design and communication tools. They have the ability to think synchronously about various aspects of architecture and building construction at different scales and have the competence to develop, elaborate, comprehensively present and coherently present design concepts.
Furthermore, students are able to critically and project-specifically analyse modern production and construction methods in timber construction, including evaluating the various techniques and processes in modern timber construction and determining their applicability for specific construction projects.Students will also be able to understand and apply the basic principles of multi-storey timber construction, particularly with regard to floorplan, statics, sound insulation and fire protection.
Implementation:After an introductory lecture at the beginning of the semester, the individual building sites are inspected together. In weekly table critiques (monday, 1 - 7 p.m.), analyses and references are compiled in individual performance.A day excursion to production sites, building sites and projects is planned to familiarise students with modern timber construction on site. The students will then work in groups of two to develop a multi-storey timber construction. To begin with, there will be a design workshop in the TVFA hall from 18-19 April, followed by an middle presentation in mid-May (15.05.2024) and the final presentation at the end of June (26.06.2024).Note: Designing and developing in groups can be both enriching and intensive. However, this way of working reflects the reality of the construction industry and it is important to familiarise yourself with its logic and negotiation mechanisms at an early stage.Even if individual assessments take place, of course, the design can only be carried out in group work; individual work (e.g. by breaking up the group) is not permitted.
Part 1) Research and references (individual work):
Part 2) Design (group work, two participants each):
