Nach positiver Absolvierung der Lehrveranstaltung sind Studierende in der Lage – After successful completion of the course, students are able to present their final project to the commission and discuss their diploma. The lab is structured as a studio, where individual work is supported by collective research.
Files, Inventories, Archives – Diploma Studio
Archives, in their various forms, are occupying more and more space inside and outside cities, constantly questioning our relationship with the past. At the same time, the relationship between archives and territory is not only spatial as it derives from geographical provenance and how the collections were acquired.
The shape of archive buildings ranges from big boxes to historical monuments, all associated with the same function, i.e., to foster a collection. The relationship between these two subjects – the archive building and the archived materials/documents– is indeed an interrelated one, where the value and power of the content are well represented by the physical manifestation of the container.
On the other hand, the archive manages to question the notion of “form follows function” and – despite performing a seemingly specific task– is easily arranged in very different shapes, successfully escaping any typological categorization.
The Diploma Lab "Files, Inventories, Archives" will investigate the topic both by research and design, focusing on the context of Vienna.
Individual work will be supported by collective research and presentation.
Meetings are every second Thursday, with the final delivery in June and the possibility of extending the work to the winter semester.
A kick-off event will take place on 07.03.2024 at the Gestaltungslehre und Entwerfen Seminar Room.
