After successful completion of the course, students are able to deepen design competence in:
- conceptual and constructive thinking
- refined application of architectural design and mediation tools

The main objective of this course under the theme of "spatial composition and constructive expression" is to take a closer look at the relationship between the void (space) and the elements (matter) that define it. In the spatial totality, each gesture claims its own space. Thus, some elements appear dominant and directional, others complimentary and dissolving. In designing, these elements are brought together in a composition. They are not a mere reflection of the constructively necessary dimension, but are an expression of the architectural ambition.
Spaces appear particularly charged when these elements enter a borderarea of their reach and can only exist in interaction with other elements. A concise beamwork, for example, which can only be conveyed by a fine cassetting. The heaviness of the wood paneling in the Looshaus, which nobilizes the fine articulations of the railing. A symbiosis of two gestures that singularly would not be able to define the room.
Our investigation begins with a reappraisal of an existing designed space (The Loos-Bank at the intersection of Mariahilfer Straße/Neubaugasse) as well as a arbitrarily created space (a stone quarry). Successively these findings will be transferred into spatial ideas. In the methodological consideration, special attention will be paid to these borderareas, which will be investigated in a series of 3 experiments. An approach from an abstract to a concrete space, which will be implemented by the students with plans and models 1:25 and then an analysis of the results, which represents both the theoretical and practical findings.
