After successful completion of the course, students are able to implement a complex design process in their own architectural processes - based on previous research and analysis of complex conditions influencing an architecture design brief
Constructing with bamboo – In a context of diminishing resources, bamboo has (re)emergaed as an interesting material for building in recent years. With s renewal cycles of about 5 years, bamboo can be seen as a fast-growing alternative to wood. Some of the more than 1000 bamboo species are suitable for use in structural elements in architecture due to their height, diameters and wall thicknesses.
In this design studio, we explore the material-specific properties and the resulting material characteristics and implement these principles in a design for a small-scale (temporary/mobile) construction In addition to the architectural quality, a special focus should will be on the built structure as well as on innovative material-specific connection details. 3D-modelling can support and supplement but not replace the physical models.
The student’s projects should be developed based on a series of physical models, staring with concept, early design, etc. Ultimately, the evolution of the design should result in a presentation model on a larger scale, in which the architecture is represented as well as material-specific connection details.
progress of the project during the course, reviewed and discussed at the regular project meetings, presentations and submissions.
