"The opening and networking of spaces"
In 2024, the Salzkammergut region will become the European Capital of Culture - for the first time, 23 communities in the rural inner-Alpine region will join together to form a Capital of Culture.
Going beyond the much-discussed topic of overtourism, Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut region play a special role in the question of housing needs and living environments of diverse user groups (residents, schoolchildren, tourists, etc.), whichrequire new and innovative perspectives and impulses. In addition, parameters such as new working environments, digitization, mobility issues, dealing with inventory and resources and the resulting new role of rural areas open up a wide range of future issues.
The cooperation between the research area Housing and Design at the Vienna University of Technology and the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 makes it possible to make the university discourse visible to the public on site - and thus to stimulate dialogue on a broad level.
• Task
After the focused examination of Hallstatt in recent years, we now want to focus more on the Salzkammergut region and its specific parameters and framework conditions in the "Zoom Out" and then work on exemplary locations in the "Zoom In" that are suitable for certain questions in the region, network these (thinking) spaces and relate them to "Learning from Hallstatt". Among other things, the handling and programmatic transformation of selected existing and vacant properties will play a central role in terms of content.
We want to approach these places, their phenomena and the question of different living environments as well as the needs of diverse users using different media or genres (architecture, literature and film, etc.), research and impulse lectures as well as individual journeys of discovery on site. Subsequently, specific questions should be formulated in order to generate potential and strategies for the interaction of these complex, dynamic parameters and areas of tension.
The four program lines of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 also form essential content-related connecting points: power and tradition / culture in flux / sharing Salzkammergut - the art of travel / globalocal - building the new.
• Structure / mode
The design studio is understood as the development of a collective knowledge space from which specific projects can be developed - both research-based, conceptually artistic and specific design tasks.
The design studio "Hallstatt_Denkwerkstatt 2024" builds on the previous bachelor's and master's design studios, which have dealt with the tension between the global phenomenon of overtourism and living in a local and regional context.
The design studios, workshops and on-site events as well as an accompanying publication format are part of the applied research project "Living in Extremis: Hallstatt - Salzkammergut 2024", which has been running since 2020, which includes focal points in research and teaching and in close cooperation with art and cultural institutions such as the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 and the Festival of the Regions 2021 as well as the municipality of Hallstatt deepened questions and studies on the topic. The dialogue with the above-mentioned partners and the presentation of the results on site are further important building blocks of this format.
The entry into the design process begins with short assignments, basic analyzes, accompanying lectures as well as an exploration of the processing location. Dealing with the specific topic is developed and documented in a process based on research results, (plan) graphics or alternative display formats (e.g. film, texts, models, etc.), starting with the urban planning scale up to the focus scale.
