After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on a design task from the field of spatial design, in which the concept of space and the understanding of spatial relationships form the starting point of the design. They learn to deal critically with basic questions of museum space, in particular with the question of how spatial and architectural objects appear as exhibits in an exhibition via various displays and forms of representation, and reflect on the question what meanings and possibilities these forms of representation imply. They will be able to derive suitable design principles through scientifically-methodologically based research on curatorial approaches and historical as well as contemporary exhibition displays and to appropriate these for their own design work. They will be able to comprehensively represent, present and construct exhibition and display concepts in the form of design and detail plans.
The cooperative course taking place in the winter semester 23/24 between the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Research Unit: Expanded Museum Studies, Prof. Julienne Lorz) and the Vienna University of Technology (Research Unit: Spatial Design, Prof. Wilfried Kuehn) will deal with a collection of the Architekturzentrum Wien from different perspectives but as a common experience.
Drawings, photographs, texts and other works by Heinz Tesar as well as architectural photographs by Margherita Spiluttini will be available from the archive of the Architekturzentrum Wien.
In his self-image as an architect and artist, Tesar crosses the boundaries between disciplines in his drawings and texts. Spiluttini's very extensive body of work has been instrumental in establishing architectural and landscape photography as art in their own right. In examining the work of both artists, we address questions about media of architectural representation as a means of expression and presentation.
The archival material provides an analog reference to the subject matter, which will subsequently be worked on by the students across media. Based on the extensive works of Heinz Tesar and Margherita Spiluttini, and in exchange with curators of the AzW, conceptual reflections and analyses with further references are developed using various media (sketch, text, model construction, architectural photography, model photography, plan representation, ...).

A core aspect of the course is the exhibition as a medium, which should enable levels of mediation, bringing together different temporality(ies), real-spatial location, exhibits, research, presentation and discourse.
As a result of the design process, architecture students will conceptualize and curate an exhibition in March 2024 at the University of Applied Arts in interdisciplinary exchange with students of the master course Expanded Museum Studies and design their own displays for it.

The relationship between space, image, and the image of architectural space will be theoretically investigated on various levels and become the starting point for the curatorial and architectural models of exhibiting. Specific narratives in artistic and architectural work are addressed in relation to current issues. The analysis of references as well as an intensive examination of the given context form the entry into the design work. Through closer examination, selected examples are explored in terms of their material and immaterial qualities, from which an understanding of design and technical design principles is developed and implemented for the student's own project work.
