Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to methodically develop the design of a building. The students are able to understand design as an integral, at the same time rational and creative work, which, taking into account the most diverse, sometimes disparate and divergent framework conditions, attempts to converge in the architectural design. They are able to take an informed position on contemporary positions and problems in their design task. You are able to master the structural engineering and constructional challenges of sustainable buildings. They are able to create architectural concepts, develop them into a building and present them comprehensively in the form of design and detailed plans.

Subject of course

We live in a time of great social, technical and economic upheaval. One of the great challenges of our time is climate change. As one of the main causes of climate change, architecture plays a special role. Construction is responsible for about 50% of greenhouse gas emissions in western countries. The actions of architects are therefore determined by the greatest social scope and responsibility.

Am Berg: Following these premises, the sustainability of constructions - materials and systems - should be discussed as part of this design. A special focus is placed on the 'genius loci et climatis', i.e. the specific characteristics of the place and the climate. The reduction – by way of example – to the Berg construction site is intended to sharpen the focus on these questions. In the extreme, exposed location, the essence of buildings as a reaction to the regional, climatic conditions becomes clear. In this design, the term climate design is to be examined from a structural engineering point of view and working with limited, but today's best, means is to be practiced. It is about technical as well as social and economic aspects - the potential persistence of concepts, technologies, typologies.

Based on an intensive initial phase, in which approaches to architecture are examined in the form of literature research and reading, an individual examination of the building task should take place. The aim of the exercise is the design and constructive elaboration of a building. The question of climatic and structural resources is an essential part of the discussion. The constructive discussion will deal with systemic and material aspects.
