Major events, such as international exhibitions, Olympic Games, World championships etc., are usually organized with great enthusiasm. The organizing countries want to become a showcase for the world. Huge investments are made for events that last only a short time. However, the future of this important facilities and constructions is very often not very clear. Many examples testify of major problems of the reuse and the future of these facilities.
Fortunately, in recent years, these problems have been addressed with much more attention, but the solutions are never easy.
This is also true for the Dubai EXPO 2020, which, due to pandemic reasons, has taken place one year later, from October 2021 to March 2022.
This is what the official plan says:
The Future of Expo 2020 Dubai: District 2020 will evolve from Expo 2020 Dubai as a smart and sustainable city centred on the needs of its urban community. It will provide a curated innovation-driven business ecosystem that brings together global minds and embraces technology and digital innovation to support industry growth. Following the six months of the World Expo, District 2020 will re-purpose 80% of the Expo’s build environment into an integrated mixed use community that will continue to attract businesses and people to work, live, visit and enjoy.

But is this really the case?
The objective of this design studio is to analyse and make proposals for the life after the Expo. At the beginning of 2023, almost one year after the end of the exhibition, it seems like the right moment for such a research.
Organisation of the design Studio
Students from both universities will discuss, research and develop design ideas based on approaches of reusing of the existing building or parts of it instead of demolishing it down after the event of the Expo. Students will need to conduct deep analyses of the given environment and existing needs and possibilities in order to develop a meaningful design proposal for the given assignment.
The structure of the studio will be as followed:
Students at AUD will start their semester in Jan 2023 and will be working on their research and design.
Students at TU will start in February 2023 with an excursion to Dubai followed by a workshop at the University AUD in Dubai, where they will be involved in the daily university life at AUD.
In May 2023 students from Dubai will visit TUW and will also experience and benefit from reviews at the TU Wien.
There will be several online joint reviews between TU Wien and AUD, where students can benefit from the inputs of their peer colleagues as well as from professors from both universities.
As the two semesters in Vienna and in Dubai do not end at the same time, most probably it won't be possible to have a final submission and review at the same time, however both groups will have the opportunity to attend the group's final presentations.
Organisation of the excursion to Dubai
The students of the design Studio and the group of Prof Stieldorf will travel together. Further details about the trip will be announced as soon as possible.
The excursion will take place in mid-February, so registration is very urgent.
Deteails will be announced as soon as possible. Costs approx. 1.900.- EUR (incl. travel, hotel and excursion program)
