Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work out complex design tasks from the field of architecture and urban planning independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach based on a precise architectural language. They have the competence to recognise fields of action in the urban context and to develop corresponding urban planning solution approaches. The students collect independent research and subject-related basics. They create design concepts, present them comprehensively in the form of draft and detailed plans and practise presenting them convincingly.

Subject of course

Raum.Drosendorf
Space for research, exhibition and retreat

Introduction: https://tube1.it.tuwien.ac.at/w/3wQKJp6Lgv4tGy3RYuHweE

Raum.Drosendorf is a place for communication, exhibition, research and mediation. Research foci in the field of architecture and space are developed here and presented and put up for discussion via temporary exhibitions. It is a place of study, but also a meeting point and starting point for exploring the Waldviertel and the neighbouring Czech Republic. Socio-political discourse, constant dialogue and togetherness are also to be cultivated in this special environment.

Drosendorf is a place with exceptional qualities that are closely related to the landscape. The small town of Drosendorf with its prominent location on a rocky spur in a loop of the Thaya River and Drosendorf Castle, which is situated along the continuously preserved town wall, form the spatial centre of this design course. The Thaya Valley National Park and Podyjí, the border region Austria / Czech Republic as well as the unique cultural landscape of the Waldviertel form the backdrop of the town, which lives through its rich history from the defence against the army of King Ottokar to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the new common Europe. The 1.7 km long town wall encloses the old town and ties in the former castle, now Drosendorf Castle. Town gates and terraces accompany the historic fortifications. The castle dates back to the 12th century and was rebuilt and extended in 1692 after a fire. It is owned by the Hoyos family. For over 40 years it was an educational institution and has been tried and tested as a seminar and guest house. It has been empty since May 2021, and a new use has been sought since then. The castle with its diverse, open-use rooms as well as the castle courtyard and the surrounding green spaces offer excellent conditions for establishing something new.

The landuni, a pilot project of the Faculty of Architecture and Spatial Planning, has found a location in Drosendorf for a limited period of two years where researchers, students and teachers can come together to share and increase knowledge, passion and action for the land with local residents and guests. Away from the usual facilities and institutions, the project "Raum.Drosendorf" wants to create an integrative place of encounter and exchange that intensifies the relationship between city and country, between guest and residents and between teachers and students and strengthens the relationships.

Place of research, place of stage, place of exhibition, place of retreat

Raum.Drosendorf is a place of research where learners and teachers meet and exchange ideas. The concentrated atmosphere of the castle and its surroundings are intended to intensify and promote exchange.
Raum.Drosendorf is also a stage, a place for events. Residents, guests, students and teachers meet at special events, seek exchange and communication and work together to develop new ways and strategies.
Raum.Drosendorf is also a place of exhibition where science, art and nature meet. The place is a space for research, production and presentation, but also for archiving.
Raum.Drosendorf is not least a place of retreat, reflection and silence. Interspaces open up here that everyday life in our world does not allow. Experiencing time together and working together to create space for new things and open up new dimensions should be possible here.

Teaching methods

Based on a spatial location and inventory analysis and research into selected examples of multifunctional or openly designed institutions and buildings, you will develop a concept for a house that serves as a multifunctional place of exchange and mediation. In a team, you will develop planning principles and spatial analyses in order to record the existing situation. In groups, you will define a space programme that is as innovative as it is needs-based, derived from the space available on site. Exhibition focal points will be derived from the thematic areas of Anonymous Building (Bernard Rudofsky), Correalism (Friedrich Kiesler) and Visionary Architecture (Günter Feuerstein). In individual work, you will define an exhibition and research building that does justice to the multi-layered tasks and interlocking functions of Raum.Drosendorf and, through its spatial programme, opens up possibilities for mediation and presentation as well as for communication, communal exchange and (research) retreat. You will work out a selected room area in detail using analogue models and drawings.

The design work is divided into sections and passes through several scales.

The project is developed using physical models.

The design is an integrative design for Bachelor and Master students with structural specialisation. You will develop the statically relevant load-bearing structure for your own design. Structural variants are to be designed and investigated, with the focus on questions of bracing, dimensioning and assembly, etc.

Curatorial and exhibition-relevant concepts, spatial areas and displays are developed in detail and placed in context with the spatial offer.
Exam immanent. Subtasks are documented in steps in the Dropbox RG. The submission of the design is planned as an analogue presentation. Due to Covid security conditions, the submission can be made digitally. A comprehensive presentation of the project in plans, models and documentation of the project in digital form in RG Dropbox, publications and exhibitions is expected.
To deepen the course content, exercises in the spatial laboratory LV253.G73 4 ECTS.and excursions LV253.E82 2 ECTS. are offered as part of the design. Documentation work at Drosendorf Castle is planned as part of LVA 251.883 Collaborative Work with 2h / 3ECTS Transferable Skills.
