Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • to process a complex design task independently and in a small group;
  • to develop an integrative project taking architecture AND structural design, as well as aspects from urban and social design into account;
  • to recognize and discuss essential project-related (structure, material and design) issues;
  • work on questions of optimization from an architectural-constructive, ecological, as well as spatio-social perspective;
  • and finally develop and elaborate a coherent design solution, as well as appropriately presenting it to a professional audience.

Subject of course

Experimental development of a pavilion-like spatial structure (free-standing, lightweight building) in public space with versatile spatial and functional configurations. The architectural concept will be developed in line with the proposed programming in public space. The spatial structure development is based on an in-depth analysis of geometric and constructive priniciples.

The focus of this course is the development of the architectural design in iteration with the supporting structure, which is constantly optimized with regard to geometric criteria of structural performance and constructive design. The investigations are carried out with analogue and digital models, including algorithm-supported planning tools.

As a casestudy, the project is to be planned for a period of one year at various locations in Vienna. The design shall be developed up to a 1:1 structure and parts o fit shall be tested das a mock-up.

The design studio will be in English and German.

Teaching methods

At the beginning students will work on their own project ideas which will be merged to smaller groups.

  • Combination of individual work and team work:
    • The first task and its presentation takes place as individual work.
    • After the concept presentation and the discussion of the design approaches, teams of 2 -4 students shall work together. The aim here is to expand the possibilities for discussion.
    • Following the intermediate presentation, selected projects may be detailed in such an extent that a realisation is possible.
  • Accompanying, inputs to relevant tools (Grashopper, Karamba, etc-) and subject-related inputs to architecture, programming and urban design.
  • Subject-related research and its appropriate presentation
  • Compiling relevant research questions and discussion with experts
  • Presentation in front of a professional audience
  • Creation of a book chapter as summary of the project.
