Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on a design project whose starting point is the concept of space and the understanding of spatial relationships. They learn to critically examine the basic questions of museum space, in particular through an in-depth examination of a specific context and the questions it raises about the treatment of the location and architectural stock as well as the history of culture and urban building.

Subject of course

“a history of art could be conceived not so much in terms of changing styles as of changing relations between the artist and the world surrounding him.” – Nikolas Pevsner, Academies of art, past and present.
The design project focuses on the relationship between art and knowledge production, the exhibition space as a site of socio-political analysis and the spatial interrelations between public interior spaces as sites of representation and half-public or half-private spaces as sites of artistic production.
In his statement for a design study for the reconstruction of the K. K. Academy of Fine Arts in 1910, Otto Wagner describes how the spatial dispositions reflect their representational functions and how social contexts could be illustrated via the configuration of the studios. These social and spatial relationships were subjected to a number of changes in the course of the 20th century and present themselves radically differently from the perspective of today’s art production. The art:space module in the summer terms 2020 and 2021 was dedicated to examining contemporary artists’ positions and highlighted thematic issues at the intersection between art and architecture.
The design of an arts school builds on these issues and translates them into a project for contemporary Vienna and its urban transformation as rapidly growing European city. The subject of the plans is the area along the Nordwestbahnstraße opposite the future city development area of the current freight station in immediate vicinity of the Baroque Augarten.

Teaching methods

Theoretical basics and analyses of selected historical and contemporary examples prepare students for the design project. The designs, done individually or at a maximum in groups of two are exclusively worked out on the basis of physical models and freehand sketches. Models in various scales beside the free-hand sketch are employed as design instruments for examining and developing various design subjects. In the course of the term, the results of the design process are questioned and discussed at regular intervals by the students amongst themselves as well as with external guests.
