2021W, VU, 2.0h, 3.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

to use planning-relevant criteria for ecological building with clay and renewable raw materials in planning.

They have the necessary knowledge base for design decisions regarding the contribution of clay and renewable resources to the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings.

They have also developed the ability to assess planned and built buildings for sustainability (evaluation criteria, assessment tools, national and international labels)

Students are capable of judging which construction methods and materials can be used in the respective climate and the respective region in the sense of sustainability (light, solid, wood, clay, concrete, renewable, recyclable, ...)

Subject of course

As an alternative to conventional components oriented towards energy consumption and the thermal renovation of buildings, this LVA places emphasis on ecological material selection and application.

In addition to resource efficiency, the focus is also on primary energy requirements during production, as well as on demolition and disposal scenarios. These ecological evaluation criteria serve as a basis for the demonstration of selected planning and renovation concepts, which are presented on the basis of realized as well as currently planned projects.

The use of renewable building materials such as loam, wood, straw, hemp, flax or even reed is based on the theoretical content based practice-oriented and made understandable with the important for the basic understanding cross-references to building physics and ecology.

During this phase of the course, students will have the opportunity to get to know the materials, u.U. also apply.

In addition to the thermal insulation of exterior walls by means of exterior and interior insulation, new construction and renovation solutions for the roof, uppermost floor slab, floor slab and foundation area are presented. Also shown are positive examples of renovation of windows and doors as well as surfaces such as plasters and paints.

Execution instructions and detailed solutions (connection of ceiling, window, perimeter zone etc.) complete the presentation of the individual component constructions and enable optimal applicability in further planning practice.

Presentation of Environmental Quality Assessment through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA)

In the coming semester, the focus will be on the compilation of a component catalog for earth building with renewable raw materials.

Teaching methods

Getting to know the construction methods, building materials and their processing on the basis of lectures and excursions to exemplary buildings such. the S-House in Böheimkirchen, the VIVIhouse (IBA project of the TU Wien) - if possible in attendance. Alternatively, virtual tours and videos..

Mode of examination

Written and oral

Additional information

The theory units take place online as a blocked unit at an appointment.

To check: The successful participation in two blocks in connection with an activity report on the topics covered is required to positively conclude the event.

The attendance on the introduction date is mandatory in order to ensure the subsequent participation in the practice units.
