  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyse basic factors of spatial design and to combine them through simple partial exercises into a complete, comprising design. Cross-scale spatial sequences from urban space to small-scale space and their architectural structure will be examined. The students can work through the spatial design down to the material-specific detail. They will understand how to relate relationships between outside and inside as well as between spaces of various public and private spheres, and how to apply those relationships within the framework of the exercise.

Subject of course

The module teaches how to analyse the basics of spatial design, including typologies, spatial models, space allocation plans, constructions, location or topos, and environmental factors. The design fundamentals are developed in the exercise in phases from concept through draft to simple, detailed solutions. Design factors such as room shapes, daylight and artificial light, as well as the design-relevant use of materials will be treated theoretically and applied in practice in the design exercises. Representation and model building techniques will be presented in the lectures and used in the exercises.

More information about the programme can be found in the Handout-GdE (pdf) under Documents. This will be put online starting in mid-September.

Teaching methods

A large part of the exercise is designed as group work (teams of 3).

Critiques will be made at weekly intervals; digital and on-site appointments are planned alternately. Attendance is mandatory.

The supplementary theoretical part (lecture Raumgestaltung) takes place on Wednesdays from 11.00 to 13.00. In advance TUWEL videos with the lecture content (RadioRaumlabor) are provided. These are to be viewed independently. A feedback through graphic reflection on the lecture content is requested from each student. This will be discussed live in small groups on Wednesdays throughout the semester. More information on dates and assignments can be found in the handout (pdf) under Documents.

In order to successfully complete VU Grundlagen des Entwerfens Raumgestaltung, this theoretical part must also be successfully completed.

Attendance Requirements:

Effective October 1, 2021, the new curriculum will be in effect. The prerequisites for participation in the VU Fundamentals of Design Spatial Design are therefore as follows: VO (lecture) Building Construction 1, VU (lecture with practice) Design Theory or VU (lecture with practice) Building Construction 1

Registration for students who were enrolled in SS24 in the course number 259.250 from now until July 14, 2024

General registration is possible from 15 July 12:00 to 15 August 2024 23:59. This applies to de-registrations, re-registrations and new registrations!!!

Students who were registered for the course series of the 2nd semester SS24 at 259.250 (VU Digitale Darstellungsmethoden 1, VU Hochbau 1, VU Tragsysteme 1 - Grundlagen, VU Zeichnen und Visuelle Sprachen 2) and also meet all other requirements for participation in the VU Grundlagen des Entwerfens Raumgestaltung have been added to the whitelist and can register in TISS from June 25 to 14 July 23:59. The exercise units (Team A, B, C, D, E) have been timed to avoid scheduling conflicts with other required third semester courses (Dreidimensionales Gestalten, Digitale Darstellungsmethoden 2). After registering in the white list, you will be assigned to a group that does not overlap with other compulsory courses of the third semester according to the timetable.

Overview of how the groups from the previous semester were taken over:

Groups A01 to A04: You can register in Team A.
Groups B05 to B08: You can register in Team B.

Groups C09 to C11: You can register in team C.

Groups C12: You can register in team C or D.

Groups D13 to D16: You can register in team D.

Groups E17 and E18: You can register in team E

Group E 19: You can register in team E or A.

Group E 20: You can register in team E or B.

After pre-registration on the whitelist, you will be assigned to a group that does not overlap with other compulsory courses in the third semester according to the timetable. The exercise units are scheduled in such a way that overlaps with other compulsory courses in the third semester (Three-Dimensional Design, Digital Presentation Methods 2) are avoided. If you are planning to change groups, you can do this independently during the general registration period, but this does not guarantee that there will be no overlaps with other compulsory courses in the third semester.

General registration from July 15 to August 15, 2024: Students who wish to register or have not completed their registration through the procedure described above can register within the general registration period as long as places are available. If you do not receive a place, you can register on the waiting list (waiting lists are only opened once all places in the groups have been filled).

Timely registration for a support group via TISS is mandatory and a prerequisite for participation in the VU Raumgestaltung.

Participation in the introductory event, the theoretical part, and the individual mentoring appointments is mandatory. Missing exercise dates and submissions automatically leads to a negative assessment and exclusion from the exercise. In the event of an unexcused absence during the first exercise unit, your place will be forfeited and will be passed on to another student on the waiting list.

Grading
Successful completion of the first phase is a prerequisite for participating in the following exercises. Attendance at all class meetings is mandatory. The final grade is made up of all submissions. In order to receive a positive certificate, the supervision appointments must be attended and all theoretical and practical subtasks must be submitted. All theoretical and practical exercises must be successfully completed in order to pass GdE Spatial Design. Dropping the course after the second meeting will automatically result in a negative grade.

Please send questions about registration only by e-mail to gde-rg@raumgestaltung.tuwien.ac.at
