After successful completion of the course, students are able to methodically develop the design of a building. The students are able to understand design as an integral, at the same time rational as well as creativ work, which under consideration of different - often disparate and divergent - frameworks, which tries to converge these in an architectural project. They are able under consideration of current topics and positions to take their own informed stand and be able to apply this to knowledge their design. They are able to conceive archictectural concepts, develop these in their buildings and make their project visible through presentation with design and detailed plans.
We are living times of great social, technical and economic upheaval. Architecture is a seismograph of society, it feels the pulse of change and makes it corporeal. At the same time, architecture is by no means just a passive receptor, but an active mover - the role of architects has always been to shape the direction of this movement. Our actions are therefore determined by the greatest social scope and responsibility.
The topic of the design studio "regenerative architecture" is a continuation of the contents of the "Engage" design studio as well as several previous design topics in the research area.
In architecture, passive measures, i.e. insulation and sealing, have long since arrived in the mainstream and seem to have become de facto standards of sustainable building. Everyone is sustainable these days. But what is sustainable? "Regenerative Architecture" therefore deals with the question of how one can not only deal passively, e.g. with the heat balance, in architecture, but also actively shape the environment with the building.
Regenerative thus refers to "renewal" on many levels, not only thermally and energetically, but also in relation to users; Human and environment. The prime example of a regenerative system is nature itself. It is the embodiment of constant change: the times of day and seasons, as well as the passage of time in general. Historically, people have tried to live and adapt in harmony with these changes.
When building, this was done through the choice of materials, but also the type of building and also through the way of life. This also raises the social question: in which environment does a person regenerate? How much does lifestyle influence the building and vice versa? How do we live, how do we work? What are the common models and what types and alternatives are there? Especially in this special year, the merging of different activities in one location has become an issue again. Which qualities play a role here?
Following these premises, this design should also deal with the sustainability of constructions - materials and systems. This involves technical as well as social and economic aspects.
The construction task is a multifunctional building with mixed use living + working + leisure with a focus on residential facilities as well as use-allocated green, e.g. in the form of terraces. Several locations in Vienna are proposed. The constructive discussion should address systemic and material aspects. The bachelor's design will also deal with different, fundamental attitudes in architecture and their influence on the design process in the form of a discursive process. Active participation is desired.
