Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

... to understand designing as a holistic and multi-layered process that calls for different skills and arguments according to different design stages and ...

... to understand architecture as project work with collective authorship

... to recognize and also to take responsibility for the realization process

... to formulate intelligent architectural arguments (preservation of resources and sustainability criteria, etc.) and to understand and use them as the drive of a design and implementation process

... to develop constructional solutions for specific, experimental challenges

... to develop an independent, critical position in the building culture discourse and to consider structural issues as an integral part of their architectural concept.

Subject of course

S T A Y C A T I O N   1 : 1 - daily pleasure infrastructures for the decarbonized society

daily pleasure infrastructures are

... new programs for the post-consumer-society`s up-coming city

... new infrastructures that allow accessibility and space for everyone

... designs for a better life: set-ups for a common well-being providing a public and climate-resilient program for a society that prefers to spend its holidays close to home.

S T A Y C A T I O N 1: 1 - daily pleasure infrastructures for the decarbonized society

builds infrastructures for stay-cation – vacation staying home. We will implement a spacial structure of useful character that is open to everyone, expands public space, generates accessibility and promotes using the Danube Canal as (fluid) public space. STAYCATION is enthusiastic about urban swimming. The DANUBE CANAL is the associated site for implementation: The program behind the term STAYCATION encounters a convincing setting, since the element of water in particular inspires imagination. Besides, the formulated political claim for accessibility finds the necessary public attention in an already controversial setting and takes a firm stand. Swimming in the canal generates a twofold surplus: Could socio-political attitude and action be any more refreshing?

STAYCATION 1: 1 focuses on construction practice and implements the following topics: nature and architecture, resource conservation, spatial generosity, constructive finesse, detailing 1:1, testing of ecological / sustainable materials and forms of sourcing (upcycling / recycling / urban mining)

1 to 1 projects are grassroots projects, bottom-up initiatives and thus a deliberate contrast to established / regular construction practice. What they lack in financial / professional equipment, they make up for through experimental spririt.

Teaching methods

Staycation 1: 1 is the on-site realization of the previous STAYCATION design program of the Winter semester. Similar to an architectural competition, the Winter semester concluded with a multi-stage project selection procedure and the resulting winning project to be realized on site. The summer semester 2021 starts at this point. The draft is in the approval and implementation phase.

Immanent topics are: the further development of the design, coordination with authorities, budget planning and checking, logistics, material resourcing and finally the building process itself.

To implement the design, STAYCATION is supported by STAYCATION OFFICE. The office relies on teamwork and is understood as a design and construction practice with accompanying specialist support. The summer semester is dedicated to all phases of architectural practice after the competition. The payment is made in the well-known ECTS currency plus the joy of realization.

The design program is expressly open to ALL interested students. We look forward to new talents to enrich an existing STAYCATION team. Practical experience and construction skills are clearly an advantage. In order to have as diverse a building team as possible, we would like to explicitly address female students. Participants from the elapsed winter semester will be preferred when allocating places.

COVID planning status February 12, 2021

A hygiene concept will accompany the course in the face-to-face part (work outdoors, regular tests, etc.). The semester is expected to be divided into two parts: March / April largely distance working / online, from May onwards: construction on site / work outdoors.

The planning of the LVA including the specified dates remains subject to COVID-related changes.
