Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to methodically develop the design of a building. The students are able to understand design as an integral, at the same time rational and creative work, which, taking into account a variety of partly disparate and divergent frameworks, tries to converge these positions within the architectural design. In their design task they are able to take an informed position on contemporary positions and problems. They are able to cope with the building construction and engineering challenges of library and performance rooms. The students will be able to create architectural concepts, develop them further into a building and comprehensively represent and present them in the form of draft and detailed plans.

Subject of course

The digital age poses new challenges for libraries worldwide. In the age of the internet and the constant and seemingly infinite availability of knowledge, an institution with thousands of years of history is in crisis. On the one hand, libraries are among those institutions that are at the forefront of digitization and technological innovations; at the same time, owing to these new technologies, this institution is facing serious changes, if not being in danger of being abolished altogether. One way into the future is perhaps to look at its core function as a place of cultural maintenance. The applied standard is not the technology, the way of collecting knowledge, but the underlying human needs, a place where knowledge and culture are handed down and passed on.

Teaching methods
