After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
… to develop an independent, critical position in the contemporary architectural discourse and to consider building-relevant questions as an integral part of their architectural concept.
… to formulate intelligent architectural arguments (conservation of resources and sustainability criteria etc.) and understand and use them as the source for design processes
… to convert conceptual and structural design ideas into an architectural project: architectural design, high-tech project development in all scales up to design details
… to develop constructional solutions for specific, experimental challenges
… to provide future-oriented answers to central social issues
S T A Y C A T I O N - daily pleasure infrastructures for the decarbonized society
The reactivation of places that were believed to be lost and (previously) inaccessible space sources also requires new accessibility for everyone and generates potential for new infrastructures.
At a specific location in Vienna, the existing (urban) space is to be made accessible and usable for the public by means of an small-scale, architectural intervention.
The functional program will be designed according to the location and is committed to possible daily pleasure infrastructures for a post-consumption society. We are searching for proposals for the good life: infrastructure facilities with a public and climate-resilient program which correspond to a de-carbonized society that has long been accustomed to spending its vacations at home.
The designs will be situated somewhere between nature and architecture, resource conservation and spatial generosity and will be architecturally expressed through concrete- utopian, public-social spatial structures. In addition to the main material wood, the material emphasis of the design programm will be on testing ecological / sustainable materials and options of procurement (upcycling / recycling / urban mining)
In the design program we will aim for design projects on a scale of 1:50 (construction plan) and 1: 20-1:5 (detailed drawing) for a specific site in Vienna.
The design will emphasize on intelligent detail and practical thinking and must be feasible with the lowest budget and simple tools / workforce.
The design in the winter semester 20/21 is the basis for an 1 : 1 project in the summer semester 21, which will bring the / a result of the winter semester to realization. However, the possibility of carrying out a practical summer semester is currently also subject to global health developments in the upcoming months (COVID 19) and is therefore subject to change.
Both the winter semester and the summer semester are offered as independent design programs. Interested students in the winter semester are given priority to the summer semester capacities. The winter semester closes with plans that are ready for realization, a jury decision and / or participatory discourse will recommend a project for realization. The summer semester is dedicated to final budget checking, logistics, material procurement and the building process itself.
- Teamwork! Winter semester: teams of 3 students each, summer semester: 1 team of 25 students
- Design program with accompanying specialist supervision: Discussion of the course content in project meetings, stage presentations.
- Independent, free and experimental processing of a design task.
Conceptual + structural idea, presentation of the project through sketch / plan (floorplan, sections, elevation)
Structural engineering elaboration including statics and building services
Detailed planning (1:50-1:5)
Spatial presentation of the project qualities, in- and exterior: sketches, perspectives, visualizations
Presentation model, scale depending on the project
