After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the concept of scientific work. They manage to write an independent seminar paper on a self-defined question according to scientific criteria. This includes a critical examination of the topic of the work, located in housing and women's policy. You have knowledge of how to deal with relevant literature, how to narrow down the topic and formulate your own research question, how to structure the material and the seminar paper, how to articulate it scientifically as well as layout and design.
Politics, business and urban planning define spatial production. Planning decisions have an impact on everyday processes of living. In the sociology of housing, housing is viewed from social and societal perspectives. It is about the interaction between the built environment, users and uses. The focus is on users with their interests and needs. Demographic and social change bring challenges for future housing. What demands do certain user groups have on housing? The user group of women is currently the focus of basic research and housing developer competitions due to the merger of the two departments of Housing / Housing Construction / Urban Renewal and Women in the Vienna City Council. The examination of women-specific aspects of housing in this course is carried out in coordination with MA50 Vienna Housing Research.
The following exemplary topics are to be worked on in the context of the seminar papers: Women's issues in the history of Viennese housing, image of women in post-war housing estates, upgrading and redensification of the Viennese housing stock taking into account women's needs, starter housing for women in training, needs of retired women and women in home care for housing construction, private housing market from a women's perspective, gender- and climate-appropriate housing construction and mobility.Relevant results of the seminar papers will be presented in an exhibition together with those from the Wahlseminar „Sozialer Wohnbau: Treffsicherheit bei Planung und Leistbarkeit für Frauen? Wohn- und frauenpolitischer Handlungsbedarf?" in summer term 2020. With the support of the MA50, this is to take place in the city hall in spring 2021. Results will also be published on the website of the Vienna Housing Research Institute.
In the group sessions, the context of the work topic is established. The seminar leaders provide impulse lectures and reading texts. Students acquire knowledge and discuss and reflect on it in group work. This is followed by short presentations on self-chosen topics in individual work. These are used to create exposés with a defined question as a preliminary stage to the seminar papers. Further instructions for the scientific writing of the papers include literature research, finding a title, content structure, writing in chapters, correct citation, layout and the creation of a bibliography and list of illustrations. Finally, the seminar papers are presented and discussed.
