Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to solve planning tasks integrally and to develop not only conservation approaches but also energy concepts for historic buildings.

The area in the southwest of Vienna houses not only one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau churches in Vienna, but also the pavilions of the former "Lower Austrian Provincial Healing and Nursing Institute for the mentally ill". The art-historical buildings of this former hospital are now to be adapted for future use. This requires careful planning of the structure and at the same time a lot of knowledge about the use of new technologies. A large part of the ensemble will in future be used as a location for a university. As part of the design, the feasibility of this complex task is to be examined. In addition to the space program, strategies for sustainable and energy-efficient construction for historic buildings are being developed and their function reviewed. In addition to the accompaniment by experts of historic preservation and building services, a training course for the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is also offered. The goal is the integral and simultaneous use of planning tools and strategies for coping with complex construction tasks.

As part of the design course Otto.Wagner-Areal.Plus, PART 2, individual pavilions of the ensemble are processed as examples. (Renovation and extension)

Subject of course

With the planned establishment of the Central European University (CEU) at the unique Art Nouveau jewel of the Otto Wagner area, there is now a unique opportunity to preserve this cultural heritage in its entirety, to make its standard fit for the future, as well as its comfort of use and value to increase.

Church and hospital on Steinhof were built according to plans by Otto Wagner. With a floor area of approximately 50 hectares, the area (OWA) consists of 55 pavilions (1907) of different sizes with a total floor space of approx. 173,100 m² gross floor area, as well as the church on the Steinhof. According to the current state of planning, 17 pavilions with a gross floor area of around 47,000 m² will be used by the CEU in the first step. The other pavilions are to be fed to a wide range of uses, such as student residences, assisted living, REHA centers, theater and art, therapeutic riding, gardening, kindergarten, cafes, canteen and restaurants, FutureEnergyLab, administration, church, etc. - while preserving the cultural heritage.

As part of the design, the feasibility of a "Historic Plus Energy Quarter for the entire Otto-Wagner-Areal" will be analyzed and a proposal for the reuse by the CEU as a climate-neutral and decarbonised listed area will be worked out.

The "Historic Plus Energy Quarter for the entire Otto-Wagner-Areal" should not only enjoy a worldwide reputation as a unique Art Nouveau jewel, but also because of the pioneering holistic restructuring in a future-proof plus-energy district with a historical dimension.

In the design course, parts of the ensemble are treated as examples.

Subject of Part 2 is the renovation and designing of the protected historical building.
