Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on complex design tasks in an existing context. Their competence ranges from the recognition of fields of action in the urban context and the development of appropriate urban planning solutions to the solution of technical details for existing buildings. Students are able to conduct independent research and collect topic-related basic information. They are able to create design concepts and to present them comprehensively in form of draft and detailed plans.

Subject of course

Campus TU: Two courtyards

A joint design by the research departments of spacial design and design, housing construction and design and structural planning. Sergey Brin and Larry Page (sons of university professors) founded their company Google by university space situations to guarantee co-development and research. They changed the world of work with this importing of a new approach and their increased interest in working out the question regarding space as a fundamental element for strengthening creativity and trans-disciplinarily. Architectural education has to face the changed conditions and the great challenges of the present and the future: it needs spaces that can ideally convey the new knowledge and the resulting design. We see new spaces for research-based design, which are in exchange with each other, as the basis for contemporary architectural education. No longer the monastery, but the city of knowledge with places of accumulation as well as spaces of retreat with condensed nodes like wide fields appear as ideal environments in which the present can be reflected upon, the past can be jointly analysed and the future can be rethought.

The main objective of the large-scale design project CAMPUS TU: TWO YARDS is to see the strategically interesting position of the TU Karlsplatz 13 with its two large courtyards as the starting point for a new spatial development. Here, different spatial situations are to be analysed and developed with drawing and project spaces as central spaces of research-based design. The courtyards are to be conceived as communication spaces and experimental fields of the university at the interface of research, design and university life at the TU. At the same time, as spaces of communication with the surrounding city, the public spaces around Karlsplatz, - they should create a public network with the city.

The design exercise will offer the dense joint design itself as a real situation within the TU. Over a period of 4 weeks with intensive supervision, the space laboratory in the courtyard will become the central drawing room for the master students involved in the project. Together, knowledge will be produced and implemented in models, plans and strategies.

Teaching methods

Design course is jointly carried out by the research fields of spacial design and housing and design and is linked to the step-by-step design from the research field of design and structural planning. If the course is taken from the research fields of interior design or housing, it is obligatory to take the step-action design in the research field of structural design. Over a period of 4 weeks in March, the students work on the development of their projects on a daily basis under intensive supervision. Afterwards the design is worked out and discussed in regular meetings.
