After successful completion of the course, students are able to relate physical to intangible information on Viennese social housing through cartography. Students will learn to use mapping as a method of knowledge production by making complex relationsships transparent. Students are going to develop their awareness of different scales and their potentials through abstraction, and also their vagueness: relationships are going to be researched on the scope of overall Vienna as well as on a more local scale on site.
Being aware of the european housing crisis and the election defeats of left wing parties in Europe we are going to look closely at the Viennese housing policy starting from Red Vienna until now. There is a high interest for Vienna since it is known for its modell of good social housing. The project „Diskursraum Wohnbau Wien“ picks up on the local and international discourse on Viennese Housing and wants to expand it.
The Department for Housing and Design is going to cooperate with ARCH+ Journal for Architecture and Urbanism and produce an edition, which is due to be published in 2021.
This Kleines Entwerfen is one among three courses which are going to be offered within the Project „Diskursraum Wohnbau Wien“.
For the production of our base map we are giong to work GIS-based software. Students are giong to get a crashcourse on such a software. Working with GIS make it possible to georeference pieces of information and to relate it for example to buildings. Students are going to start from an overall map of Vienna and then develope their research questions by individual maps. As a next step students will develop a zoom-in for a certain spot which turned out to be relevant for their research. This place is going to be then analysed empirically.
Students are going to work in groups.
