Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to record a complex design task by analyzing and developing concepts and strategies as well as to prepare them in a plan and present and communicate them using presentation graphics and models.

Subject of course

Around one million tourists a year with 760 inhabitants - Hallstatt, located in the heart of the Salzkammergut tourist region, currently stands for the term overtourism like hardly any other place in Austria.

But what does this global phenomenon mean for the structure of a small village that has only a very limited expansion potential due to its exposed location between lake and mountain? For the mining location for salt extraction, which looks back on an important history and has always been characterized by strong traditions? For the important school location in the region with the HTBLA and the timber technical school, whose mostly foreign students also represent an essential factor to the need for living space? And last but not least for a place whose World Heritage status represents both - an essential trademark and a great challenge and which wants to position itself as a partner community for the Capital of Culture 2024 - Bad Ischl in a culturally contemporary way?

The design deals with the question of which strategies can be developed for the interaction of these complex, dynamic parameters and areas of tension. Subsequently, the living needs of very different actors (locals, tourists and schoolchildren) will be examined in more detail and specific architectural interventions planned for these target groups.

Based on analyzes, various locations and objects in Hallstatt will be available and will be the basis of a wide spectrum of visions and individual target formulations - from affordable living for residents to hotels for tourists, living space for schoolchildren and hybrid living models.

The accompanying excursion to Hallstatt sees itself as an incubator for a discovery trip within the framework of the design studio and is a mandatory part of this studio.

Teaching methods

The start of the design process begins with short assignments, basic analyzes, accompanying lectures and an excursion. The design is developed on the basis of plans and models of different scales, starting with the urban scale up to the detailed scale.
