Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on complex design tasks in the field of architecture and urban planning independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach based on a precise architectural language. They have the competence to recognise fields of action in the urban context and to develop appropriate urban planning solutions. Students are able to carry out independent research and establish topic-related basics. They are able to create design concepts and to present them comprehensively in the form of draft and detailed plans.

Subject of course

Art.Space.City

A space for exhibitions and performances

Vienna’s Airport City is developing from an infrastructure hub into a place of new urbanity. In addition to rising passenger numbers, the direct connection to the European high-speed rail network and the related expansion of the railway station are central to the urban space on the landside, i.e. the area this side of the security zone at the airport.

The programmatic differentiation of Airport City is reflected in new focal points such as temporary housing and a health centre. But a city also thrives on encounters beyond the functional and commercial programme. Spaces for encounters, which we associate with historical urban spaces and which form a cultural concept of the place, are largely absent at the airport and represent the great challenge today.

In previous semesters we dealt with the urban qualities and deficits of this location. These research results form the basis for the next step: concrete designs for spaces of encounter, of culture and here especially spaces for exhibition and performance.

The visual arts form the starting point for this design. It not only represents a programmatic goal, but also determines the approach: as a form of perception of a place and as a perspective on the space. In a transdisciplinary approach between art and architecture, spaces will be developed on the Airport City’s landside that are characterised by performative qualities and that, as a discursive space of encounter, enable formats ranging from exhibition to dance. Exhibition and performance spaces create a public forum of relevant themes, which relates its visitors to very different and also contradictory narratives.

Teaching methods

Based on an intensive artistic-spatial analysis of the location as well as the historical research of selected examples of exhibition and event spaces, you will develop a concept for a house that unites exhibitions and performances under one roof.

As part of a team, you will develop an urban development concept that creates a spatial connection between the city and the terminals.

In groups, you will define artistic issues that arise from the location.

In individual work you will define an exhibition and performance space.

You will work out a selected area of space down to the last detail using analogue models and drawings.

The design work is divided into sections and runs through all scales.

The project is developed on the basis of physical models.

You will be supported in the Graphic Design course with illustrations and layouts. In PR for Architects you will learn how to present your concept in public.

The Bachelor of Design is offered as integrative design with constructive specialisation.

The Master of Design is offered as integrative design with artistic specialisation.
