  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Online

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to use the sustainable building material loam in different contexts (new construction, renovation of existing buildings). The constructions and component structures suitable for boundary conditions for Lower Austria, such as the regional climate and the typical regional building traditions, are known, and the ecological advantages of loam construction can also be described and implemented technologically.

EARTH-BUILDING-WORKSHOP with EXPERTS

In the summer semester this clay building workshop takes place in the museum village Niedersulz:

Beginning of June (overnight stay in a favorable district on the spot, costs accomodation approx. € 85)

with Roland Meingast, DI Feigelstorfer, Prof. DI Dr. med. Ottner (BOKU), Karin Stieldorf

All earth building techniques are learned.

Excursion to projects in the environment and in the Czech Republic.

More details of the organisation will be announced in time via TISS.

General content:

As a supplement to the conventional energetic optimization of buildings in the field of renovation, a focus should be placed on the aspect of the choice of materials. In addition to resource efficiency, the focus is also on primary energy requirements during production and different disposal scenarios. These ecological evaluation criteria serve as a theoretical basis for the demonstration of selected thermal renovation concepts, which are presented in detail on the basis of realized as well as currently planned projects. The use of renewable building materials such as wood, straw, hemp, flax or even reed is based on the theoretical content based practice-oriented and made understandable with the important for the basic understanding cross-references to building physics and ecology.

In addition to the thermal insulation of exterior walls by means of exterior and interior insulation, redevelopment solutions for roof, top floor ceiling, floor slab and foundation area are presented. Also shown are positive examples of renovation of windows and doors as well as surfaces such as plasters and paints.

Execution instructions and detailed solutions (connection of ceiling, window, perimeter zone, etc.) complete the presentation of the individual component constructions and enable optimal applicability in further planning practice.
