Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course, students are able:
– to carry out spatial and social research and analyses and to prepare them for an architectural design.
– to understand current pedagogical approaches and to create drafts for them.
– to develop a spatial programme for the task of schoolhouse construction.
– to organise communication processes with users, to communicate and then to incorporate the results into the design.
– to develop a concept for the task, taking account of the prescribed and self-identified aspects.
– to present the design graphically.
Course Content
The design programme provides for a spatial restructuring (conversion/extension/new construction) of two secondary technical schools (IT-HTL and HAK) in Ybbs an der Donau, Lower Austria, with the spatial programme resulting from a proven, innovative pedagogical concept.
The two schools (HTL and HAK) that are to be restructured, extended or possibly rebuilt in the near future due to changed requirements are located in the centre of Ybbs. In preparation for a competition a communicative process between the users (pupils, teachers, parents, community) has been started. The results of the design programme also contribute to the discussion, spatial understanding and acceptance of the construction task and the associated requirements.
A specially developed teaching structure has been in place at the IT-HTL and the HAK since 2011, promoting individualised learning and personal responsibility on the part of the pupils.
With this in mind, the school buildings need to be re-examined, spatial potentials identified and taken into account in the restructuring.
At the same time, there will be an opportunity to reflect on the functions and uses of the school buildings and their relationship to the town‘s activities. The urban integration of the educational buildings is of particular importance for the vitality of Ybbs.

EXCURSION to YBBS an der Donau
From 16 to 18 October 2019 a three-day excursion to Ybbs on the Danube will take place.
Participation is mandatory for the design program.
