After successful completion of the course, students are able to gain an overview of the history of (affordable) housing in Vienna and develop new housing strategies for Vienna.
Wie Wohnt Wien? The history of (affordable) living.
In times of rapidly rising housing costs, Vienna is highlighted worldwide as a positive example. In comparison with other capitals of the world, the housing market in Vienna still seems to be in order. Is this true? And if so, why? The design studio "Wie Wohnt Wien?" (How does Vienna live?) wants to o disclose Vienna's housing secret.
Today, Vienna is seen as an role model in housing, but how did this come? Where did the idea of "Gemeindeabauten" (social housing) come from and what is their future? Every fourth Viennese lives in a Gemeindebau but how do the others live? How and when did the transition from brick to concrete take place in Vienna? What influence does household technology have on housing - from vacuum cleaners to Alexa? How has the ratio of income to rent developed over the past 200 years? What are the effects of building materials, politics, currencies, typologies, family compositions, housing sizes, technology, ideology, culture, urban expansion, location, public infrastructure,... on Viennese "housing utopias"?
In order to get an overview of the forces affecting housing, a visual timeline of the last 200 years will be designed: In this timeline, all the parameters that have an effect on living and housing are recorded. The timeline is intended to provide an overview, discover connections and understand developments. For this purpose we superimpose political, social and economic events. At the same time, maps of the city of Vienna will be developed, to visualize these spacial occasions.
The design studio takes place from mid-October to mid-December. There are two workshops..

Theo Deutinger (Handbook of Tyranny) is guest lecturer at the Research Department Housing and Design 2019/20.
Theo Deutinger is an architect, writer and designer of socio-cultural maps and studies. He is founder and head of TD, an office that combines architecture with research, visualization and conceptual thinking in all scale levels from global planning, urban master plans, architecture to graphical and journalistic work. Deutinger has developed ‘Snapshots of Globalization’ being multilayered illustrations and maps that represent the world in this very particular moment. He is known for his writings about the transformation of Europe’s urban culture through consummation and the influence of media. Deutinger’s work is frequently published in various magazines like Mark, Wired, Domus and has been exhibited at various occasions like Future Fictions Z33 (Hasselt, 2014), Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Shenzhen/Hong Kong 2014) and the 14th Architecture Biennale in Venice (Italy 2014). Theo Deutinger lectured and kept teaching engagements with institutions like the Bauhaus (Dessau) and Harvard GSD (Cambridge). Currently he is teaching at the Strelka Institute in Moscow and the University of Art and Design Linz (Austria).http://td-architects.eu
The timeline (as a section) and the map (as plan) are analyzed, interpreted and extrapolated as a design sketch. The focus of this design is on the investigation and visualization of data. A research methodology is learned and applied. Based on the research results, a possible future for living in Vienna will be developed.
A central element of this design studio is an interest in architectural representation, graphics, information design and the examination of different visual languages in the context of architectural production.
