After successful completion of the course, students are able to
- develop system solutions for extensions made of timber and timber hybrid constructions in residential buildings.
- recognize and deal with sociological and technical challenges in existing structures.
- develop resource-efficient and sustainable housing in timber construction.
- implement measures concerning the building physics especially with regard to summer overheating.
- integrate outdoor space, green and community spaces for residents and to utilise their resulting positive effects.
Based on the students competition sponsored by ProHolz, the task of the design is aimed at an innovative development of system solutions in timber implemented to the extension of existing residential buildings. Innovative concepts in terms of organisation, outdoor and green space, common areas, spatial containment and designing in existing contexts will be applied on three selected residential buildings in Vienna. The inhabitants' sociological meta-level is of crucial importance.
To achieve the learning outcomes defined above following strategies will be applied:
- concept development workshop
- field trip to the building site
- spatial-conceptual-sociological analyzes of the existing building
- development of individual concepts by means of sketches, working models, plans, diagrams etc.
- development of structures, components and details
- presentation using conceptual and working models, details, plans, etc.
Conceptual + structural idea, entire presentation of the project through sketch / plan (floorplan, sections, elevation) in scale 1: 200 and extractsof apartmentplans (depending on the project) in scale 1:100, facade cross section 1:20, structural engineering elaboration including statics and building services, details in scale 1:10, spatial presentation of the project qualities, presentation model 1:200
Detailed delivery requirements in accordance with advisors, team work in teams of three (if possible 2 architecture students and 1 civil engineering student)
Participation in the students competition is not a requirement for the positive completion of the course.
