Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to record a complex design task by analyzing and developing concepts and strategies as well as to prepare them in a plan and present and communicate them using presentation graphics and models.

Subject of course

The history of Italy is inseparable from the concept of ruins and the unfinished. The arch spans from historic monuments, which attract masses of tourists to the country, to a variety of residential and industrial ruins of our time, which lay like a carpet of land over the country and stand as a symbol of mismanagement, corruption and unfulfilled yearnings.
The design course deals with the question of which reactivation potentials can be generated for these abandoned places in order to develop strategies and designs for new living spaces in an old context. Creative use instead of frustrated lamentation over a global phenomenon! After all, according to Andrea Masu of the Italian artist collective Alterazioni Video, the "unfinished" is "the most important Italian architectural style of the post-war period".
On the basis of analyzes and reference projects, various places and objects will be available throughout the country and should form the basis of a wide spectrum of visions and individual target formulations - from industrial lofts to temporary residence for social fringe groups.
The accompanying excursion to Rome / Naples sees itself as the starting point and incubator of an expedition in the framework of the Grand Tour Italia.

Teaching methods

The start of the design process begins with short assignments, basic analyzes, accompanying lectures and an excursion. The design is developed on the basis of plans and models of different scales, starting with the urban scale up to the detailed scale.
