After successful completion of the course, students are able to design an apartment building with the tools text, collage, scenario and plan. A main aspect of the design process will be materiality and interiors.

Gio Ponti describes Italian living in his manifesto. For Ponti, residential buildings were a laboratory where modernity is expressed as an everyday practice of life. As such, architects should give housing a central role in their design practice.
The Students will analyze apartment buildings by Gio Ponti, Caccia Dominioni, Asnago e Vender and other key players in Milan's residential architecture with a focus on interior design and materiality. Special attention is given to Giò Ponti's complete works (Domus etc.) and Mollino's staged interiors.
The analysis and interpretation of these icons of Italian living form the basis for the design task: a contemporary interpretation and planning of the condominio all'italiana.

As part of the Milan excursion, students will have the opportunity to visit various icons of Milanese housing.
In the first phase of the course, these "Condomini" will be analyzed in terms of design concept, floor plan and materiality. The biography of the respective architect, the historical context and relevant texts are also part of the analysis. The buildings examined serve as a basis for the students planning of a contemporary Milanese apartment house.
