Among the earth-building enthusiasts this question of the discussed question becomes: How can clay-making be revived in the industrialized world?
And there is no clear answer to that.
Therefore, it is worthwhile to experiment further.
We're going to tackle this issue from different perspectives with our Stuck Rip-Off series Clay. We take the 5th attempt, and this semester, we are putting on Clay Now 5 to examine the interpretation of the historic mud building for new and find more answers
This time, we are dedicated to the smallest built (massive) housing: the micro-home. Due to its volume a number of uses. This is especially for the DIY (Design Build), because cubature and effort are manageable. A micro-home could also be produced with new possibilities of prefabrication.
As part of the design, we will examine innovative concepts in architecture and construction for the respective living space in a confined space. We focus on the state of science and technology regarding living and working with clay as a building material. The results will be presented by you.
When designing, we focus on developing and integrating new techniques, such as construction, DIY, design build, prefabrication, and proportional composition. These strengthen the awareness of healthy, comfortable and sustainable living with clay as a building material, and in the smallest of spaces. Be it on square meters or better three-dimensionally on cubic meters with as compact a volume as possible.
We will take a closer look at the case and plan a structure that is sustainable. This skin uses renewable energy forms to create comfort inside for the user. We want to reflect what we really need in life. We want to find answers to the question of how much space humans need for comfortable living. And what does a person need in addition to a quality life? How can we best use new technologies to improve our quality of life? We want to think sustainably. We want to focus on the needs of buildings and residents regarding the environment as well as the health and comfort of the users. As architects, we want to put the user at the center, while preserving the health of our environment. We offer two excursions for hands-on exploration. We offer an excursion to the Weinviertel, which will be obligatory. We will visit clay buildings and document them for the design. We will take a closer look at the building culture with clay around Vienna and examine it.
In addition, we offer a non-mandatory field trip to Iran. This also includes a practical clay building workshop. In the process, we will get to know the millennia of the ancient architectural culture of Persia and visit earthen constructions. We will reflect on the classic mud building and its traditions and develop them further for a current use - both design and technical. In June, we will again be organizing a clay building workshop in the educational building site of Niedersulz in the Weinviertel, where you will learn how to build clay. This lasts 5 days. You can register for this from the beginning of May.
