Which processes lead to latent homelessness, the living in transit? In which spatial structures and organisational forms are precarious and temporary housing situations of an increasing population manifested?
On the basis of a specific case study at the periphery of Rome, the Eurostar congress hotel, we are approaching the complex tension field in which Living in Transit is situated. Analysis, documentation as well as possible interaction with residents, actors and institutions with different methods and media are central. The theoretical confrontation and scientific research are the framework for reflexion. The presentation format of the researched content will be developed together during the semester.
Subject
Worldwide the number of people in precarious housing situations is growing and at the same time increased in architectures of transit, from hotels without stars over obsolete tourism complexes to motels. This latent homelessness is hidden, a kind of blind spot for society and politics. The waiting or the search for a better living too often ends in a dead end of chronical transit.
Content
The abandoned Eurostar congress hotel at the periphery of Rome is home to 500 people from various countries and cultures. This specific case study is the starting point to make the complex tension field of housing, politics, city, society and economy legible. Characteristics like typology, capacity, flexibility, structure of residents and the relation to the urban context should be analysed, documented and illustrated in their contextual particularity. In parallel, the theoretical confrontation with the subject Living in Transit as well as the scientific research of relevant aspects within this case study at the edge of the Italian capital are central. Getting in contact with residents, actors or institutions allows to integrate another level into the research.
