After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop design projects in the context of (historic) existing structures. The studio will encorporate all phases of the design process - from the conceptual all the way to the detailing process, including the development of a specific programme. Students will be trained in precise observation and interpretation of found conditions.
Two existing structures on the Slovak-Austrian border mark the starting point of the studio:The Devín Castle - located high above the junction of the rivers Danube and March – and the remains of a building situated along the shore. This object was designed by architect Václav Houdek and was completed in 1948. It served as the central constituent of a natural amphitheater. The two buildings developed according to their particular „hi-story“: In the course of time they were adapted, altered and finally abandoned. The task of the studio will be to transform the objects according to their new use. Their „hi-story“ will be carried on – respectfully but without fear of contact.
To following methods will lead the students towards the above mentioned academic goals:1. conceptual approach within short project2. field trip to site3. analysis of comparable projects4. spatial-conceptual analysis of the existing objects5. chronological analysis („time-line“)6. development of individual programmes7. design of structure and building components8. conceptual models, working models, digital models
