Aim of course

For many centuries, churches and parishes were not only spiritual, but also social and economic centers of cities and communities. The traces of settlement in Upper St.Veit can be traced back to the Palaeolithic period (20,000 BC), making it the oldest in Vienna. St. Veit was initially the seat of the Bamberg cathedral brothers, who operated viticulture and later dairy farming. In the 19th century Ober-St.Veit moved from suburban St.Veit to a luxury resort in Vienna. Since 1905 Ober-St.-Veit has been located in a protected green area of the Wienerwald Gürtel, which also includes the Himmelhof.
The Archbishop's Castle on Wolfrathplatz was built in the 17th century. as a Baroque, Residenzschloss and is still unchanged today in the essential elements. However, the rooms of the popular vicarage have gotten old and the traces of time make a renewal necessary.
The parish intends to initiate a showcase renovation project that will meet all the requirements of sustainable listed building preservation, is affordable and at the same time addresses the specific site and its characteristics, and has therefore launched a student competition developed as part of this design becomes. The task of the students is to develop architectural solutions that are understandable and attractive to the parish, as well as being well practicable for the parish as a builder and conducive to the community in the parish. All requirements should be combined with aesthetic, ecological and economic demands to a clever and appealing overall concept (integral design approach). Particular attention should be paid to the careful handling of the building stock, the strengthening of the ensemble and the design of the open space. The parish has determined the attractiveness of the meeting place relevant to the parish and the district as a central objective for the renovation.
With the help of the klima: aktiv criteria catalog, each project is evaluated (self) and a project profile is created which describes the achieved quality of the project proposal. The three best projects are awarded by the parish council with EURO 1.000, 1.750, 2.500.

Subject of course

In the renewal of the building stock, small interventions play a major role. They help extend the life of buildings, help to avoid demolition and reduce the consumption of building materials. If they succeed, the identification with the building fabric and, as a result, the appreciation of the buildings or building ensembles increases.
We understand settlement space as a lively natural space, which should enjoy the ecosphere of the greatest plurality. Interactions between humans and nature are potential for further development of built space. Co-design can take place in the context of assembly processes, as well as in the realization and maintenance of buildings. Technology and architecture are thus visible, understandable and can always be tailored to emerging needs.
Using the example of this real, practice-oriented project of the Parish of Ober-St.Veit, a completely sustainable and integral design based on the four pillars of sustainability is being developed. The necessary documents will be communicated during the course of the design. As a checklist for the quality of the buildings, the criteria of Klima: aktiv are used and applied.
The development of the design projects takes place in cooperation with representatives of the parish council Ober-St.Veit. In order to get to know the situation on site, the parish invites to a visit on site. It will provide the opportunity for discussions with local representatives and the administration, so that all participants can get a good idea and develop objectives and strategies.
Concrete topics of designing are:
1. Build in inventory
2. Function and usage analysis
3. Ecological and energy-efficient construction
4. Design of the open space, v.a. of the garden
Ecology:
- Permakulturelle approaches, integrated renewable energy concepts, food production methods (Bauerngartl - Urban Gardening) and energy-efficient building envelopes are explicitly encouraged
- Thermal Simulation and Evaluation (ÖGNB) are shown and applied
- Lifecycle analysis LCA is optional, can be done in parallel to the energy pass calculation with GEQ.
The designs will be presented in the context of an event at the end of January in the parish on posters and as a ppt presentation and judged by a jury.
