Architects have the opportunity to fully embrace the unique and valuable contributions they can make as design leaders in communities at risk of natural hazards. This course aims to develop practical solutions for public buildings in disaster-prone regions.
Japan will host the Olympic Games in 2020 and we will take this event as an inspiration for the design of a sports stadium which fulfils the double function of a crisis center.
Public buildings that simultaneously allow the gathering of a great number of people as well as providing the required infrastructure are significantly limited, in particular in an urban context. Thus sports stadiums are in most cases the first choice for creating emergency shelters after natural disasters. However, a stadium’s initial design doesn’t consider this special circumstance and will not prevent specific problems that may arise when a large number of people is accommodated for a longer period.
At this design studio we aim on developing a covered sports stadium located in Tokyo which combines an innovative and unique design with fully functional solutions for the regular use and the additional use as a crisis center. The Japan Austria Science Exchange Center (JASEC) coordinates the scientific cooperation between the faculties of TU Wien and Japanese research institutions. This design studio is part of the cooperation focal point “Disaster Mitigation” with team members of the faculty of architecture, JASEC, Japanese experts and DCNA (Disaster Competence Network).

This course is offered as a 10 ECTS (UE 253.B12) and 5 ECTS (UE 253C38) design studio with different requirements regarding the level of detail in solving construction, function and model making.
