rebeauty II
research, design & transformation
Gastlecture Jan Körbes - refunc/ Berlin
KICK OFF: Wed 03 October 2018, 11.00, Raumlabor!
The effects of our construction activities with regard to climate and resource management also present us as architects with ever new challenges. The material itself is increasingly becoming the focus of the architectural process, and innovative strategies and ideas for a functioning closed-loop economy are being sought.
Under the title “rebeauty – design for disassembly and reuse”, in the 2018 summer semester, students dealt with the development and research of new, possible design strategies dealing with the topics of reuse and dismantling of materials. In the 2018/19 winter semester, under the title rebeauty II and based on a building, a continuation of this research field with the focus on material analysis and the realisation of 1:1 mock-ups will be offered.
Material quality and neighbourhood history, identification and appreciation, form the core of the content-related analysis.
Building & Material
An empty factory area in the north of Vienna near Kagraner Platz is available to us this semester as a “resource store”. The material found in the building and the immediate surroundings is analysed, materials are removed under guidance and transferred to a new context. New spatial uses and applications are developed on the basis of 1:1 prototypes and building designs. The draft-design process begins with a topic-related symposium on site and forms the introduction to the research process. An important aspect of the design process is working together on site.
Experiment, Motif & Typology
The existing urban building stock hides considerable material resources of regionally available components that would be suitable for reuse but which are mostly destroyed and disposed of during dismantling or demolition. The conscious use of existing material and a focused approach give rise to new typologies and motifs in architecture. The reused material itself and its application potential form the core of the task. Innovative approaches and concepts are sought and developed in a given, real-world context. In a joint experiment, new functions and components are developed and finally presented in the form of a publication and an exhibition.
