To sign in please show a collage "Vision Airport 2068", one picture A3.

Airport City Vienna is on the threshold of major changes. The eastern region and the Vienna airport region benefit from its location qualities and excellent infrastructure. The office city is no longer just the central administrative facility of Vienna International Airport, but has developed into an attractive office and administration location. However, Airport City is in competition with many attractive development zones in and around Vienna. Sustainable development is not based solely on the optimisation of existing buildings, but is embedded in a multitude of measures that define the qualities of a location. We are seeking the image, the vision of a city as it presents itself in 2068. A place in the future to live, work and relax!

We use the enormous development potential of Airport City and the region to learn what factors define the quality of the location. The parameters of the location, its infrastructure, its services and its object qualities are examined in a coherent way and worked out in isolation as design criteria. They form the basis for identifying development opportunities and thinking about them further as architectural measures. The aim is to create a matrix that makes individual steps of future developments in the Airport City visible.

Subject of course

The Research Lab, Vienna Airport City project is based on constructive teaching of teaching content across semesters that can also be viewed in isolation.

Facing the Future_Airport City Vienna_winter semester 2018/19

The winter semester focuses on the analysis and evaluation of sustainable development strategies and their presentation in the form of design parameters. The aim is to design and present the measures in the form of exemplary design topics in the areas of work, temporary living and leisure.

Vienna Airport City is sited at the centre of the highly dynamic business location of Vienna International Airport and offers offices in the immediate vicinity of the terminal and the logistics and freight handling centre, Cargo Center Vienna, and the Future Zone Ost & West. On a total of 360,000 sq.m., a completely new business conurbation is being built in the immediate vicinity of Vienna’s city centre.

Additional information

We are looking for committed students who are prepared to face the realities of architectural practice with the visions of the future 2068.

In addition to designing for bachelor and master students, the research focus can be deepened within the Spatial Design module, the Bios module and soft-skill disciplines (graphics, PR).

As part of the design workshop, a competition entry will be developed as an intensive design, which is to show Vision 2068. Participation of the workshop allows the entry of the Competition “Airport City Vienna”.

Examination modalities

Design method

The design is being developed on the basis of an analogue model with the aid of drawings, and through conceptual representations in various scales under special consolidation of the design of the space with light, forms, colour, and material. Analyses, lectures, workshops and excursions accompany the design programme. Brief constructive works guide through the task and constitute a framework and support through to the elaboration of the design work.

Degree of elaboration/judgement criteria

Elaboration of a scenario, fundamentals analysis, development of a space programme and representation of a sustainable design concept under special consideration of the landscape, urban, material and social conditions. The project is to be developed in the form of analogue models.
