After successful completion of the course, students are able to design and conduct a qualitative- research design for a small project in the realm the research in the built environment and to conduct research. . Furthermore, the students gain basic methodological knowledge for working with scientific text and are able to present reflect and discuss their results.

Focus Summer Term 2021:
The Floor Plan
the focus of the seminar in the summer term 2021 will be laid on one of the key-concern of the architecture of housing: the floor plan. ever since modern architecture has re-oriented towards the production of affordable residential space as an answer to the the urgen housing question of the late 19th century, the layout of the floor plan has been at the centre of disciplinary attention. the floor plan has been systematized, anlayzed and optimized -even if, waht was meant by that has changed over the course of history. The proper floor plan, it turns out, has alsways been measaured according to changing criteria.
Beyond that, the floor plan is much more than the mere arrangement of functions articulated in space. It is where economic and technical paradigms, ideas of morality or hgiene, relations of family-policy, of gender, or class have been negotiated, criticised and materialized.
Methods should not only presented, they should be applied and tested. In this seminar, we will go through various research approaches apporaches to analyze the floor plan in both, theory and practice, using apporaches from both within the disciplinary boundaries of architecture as well as from outside. During the winter term we will deal with various methods in the research of the built environment. Unlike other disciplines, architectural research does not hold an established methodological canon which is passed down within the discipline. Various methodological approaches from other disciplines however found their way into the discipline; adapted and modified they can coomplement the disciplinary instruments of research within the built environment. The seminar discusses the adequacy and applicability of various methods for architectural research.
Meetings take place on Mondays between 3.00 pm and 6 pm
the seminar will be offered via zoom.
