Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on, complete and present projects on sustainability in the Team Service Learning project.

The interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary course on sustainable development with the main focus ¿Sustainability finds city.The SDGs as an opportunity for urban change? ¿Wants to promote the networked understanding of economic, ecological and social social development and give students the chance to put theoretical concepts into practice. On the one hand, lecture blocks take place at the participating universities (WU, BOKU, TU, Uni Wien), in which the annual topic and associated challenges are explained and discussed from different perspectives. On the other hand, students develop local answers to the discussed challenges as part of service learning or start-up tracks by developing specific projects and implementing them directly with the support of various actors.

Urban change and SDGs - from a scientific perspective (BOKU block)


Subject of course

Academic content, TU Vienna: Planning and building are characterized by intensive change caused by climate change and reactions on it. It has become mandatory to look on the environmental impact of buildings over their lifetime - from construction to demolition and recycling or reuse. But - how do "Buildings for the future" look like? Do innovative ideas and design meet the challenge of sustainable building? Are there any concepts to deal with e.g. the growing gap between rich and poor in a constructive way? In the context of this course outstanding architecturally and technically solutions will be presented. Their contribution to sustainability will be discussed, starting with the ecological passive house standard, continuing with energy plus solutions, participative models, climate conscious design, the use of renewable energy supply and renewable building materials. Finally, an overview over the latest trends in the field of building assessment will be given - including economic aspects.
