Performing Jaroslavice

Performative interventions attract cross-regional attention and open up new perspectives for the place. Why it is worth, to develope a village on the outskirts of a city - this is the research project.
Jaroslavice is located about 80km north of Vienna on the Czech border at Laa an der Thaya. After the Second World War, a large part of the German population was forcibly evicted and expropriated due to the Benes decrees.
In Jaroslavice there was a Gothic border castle since the 13th century, which was replaced in the 16th century by a four-winged Renaissance castle.
Due to the border situation (Iron Curtain after the Second World War), the place remained almost unchanged in recent decades. Even after the opening of the borders in 1989, the economic situation in Southern Moravia has not improved. The population is leaving, those who have no other option are left behind.

task
The design task deals with the place and tries to find its identity in history and present.
The place, which has been in deep sleep for almost 100 years, due to its historical development, seems to be waiting for its revival. The digital development brings the city to the countryside and moves the country close to the city. The geographical proximity and the good transport connection to Vienna seem to be a good condition for new developments.
The aim of the task is to realize a performative intervention on the spot, which can be the starting point for new developments. The design task deals with these possible spatial developments. Which interventions can be the basis for future development?

The project is carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture Brno / Czech Republic and Cept University in Ahmedabad / India.
