Already during the Modern movement architects defined housing as the main task of architecture. Even in face of radical changes of our current society, this task remains in many insights a pivotal one. But how should it be formulated today, according to our current conditions?
Starting from the personal perspective of the participants, the course approaches the contemporary societal and cultural context of housing. The pressure on mass housing is worldwide very high, urbanisation ist still raising and affordable housing for the new urban population needs to be provided fast. In cities households are more and more differentiated and with them the expectations about domestic spaces.
The course starts from the historical transition of the housing culture from the industrial society and then focuses on the current differentiation trends: social milieus, life styles, time and space patterns, live-work, global perspectives... Housing models, that connect to the ideas of the Modern movement, will be critically discussed on the base of their capacities to react to rapidly changing conditions. Which qualities are for whom relevant today? Which possibilities should be considered? For whom? How do architects react? And what do the end-users say?
