rebeauty
design for disassembly and reuse
Design studio Bachelor and Master I Excursion Copenhagen SS 2018 with visiting professor Søren Nielsen - Vandkunsten / DK
KICK-OFF: Mo 05 March 2018, 15.00, Sem.1!
It has become a widely known fact that building industry is facing increasing challenges to deal with the impact on the climate as well on the household of resources caused by its construction activities. Architects play a central role in that process and are challenged to develop new technical and innovative design strategies for a process that we call “circular economy”.
Vienna’s urban existing building stock offers a considerable amount of material resources and building parts, which could easily be re-used in constructions but are in fact mostly destroyed or wasted. A careful and reflected use of the material will allow for a new development of architectonic typologies and moves the material into the focus of an architectonic design process.
What kind of extraordinary spaces can be developed if we follow a strategy which is working intensively with topics like material quality, architectonic ornaments, and history of the site? Which social impact can be achieved by discovering and valuing reused building components?
Building & Material
In the upcoming summer term, we will exploit a vacant office building as a material resource. It is owned by the ÖMV, was built in the 1980ties and will be dismantled in close future. We will use the buildings’ material, will analyze the neighboring context and will transfer the harvested building parts to a new site and context. New spatial programs will be developed by building 1:1 prototypes. A symposium related to the topic of reuse at the site will kick-start the design process and will offer synergies with the program and students of the module BIOS. An important aspect of the program will be the work at the building site!
Experiment & Beauty
The development of new design strategies derived from topics like “reuse” and “disassembly” will form the focus of our investigation. Balancing technical and aesthetic considerations will consequently bring the beauty and the robustness of material to the foreground. Innovative approaches and concepts will be developed in order to find and apply potentials of specific reuse in real contexts. Joint experiments will help us to find new functions for building parts and will allow for a final presentation of the gained research in the form of a publication and an exhibition.
Excursion Copenhagen: 21.-25. March 2018
We offer an excursion to Copenhagen including a visit to the office Vandkunsten Architects conducted by Søren Nielsen and Susanne Marie Dethlefsen. We will visit contemporary examples of Danish architecture in the context of 'Architecture & Reuse'. Travel and accommodation has to be organized individually, approximate costs: €500.- Registration starts immediately via mail or personally at the institute!
