Tiruvannamalai, named after the central deity of the Annamalaiyar Temple, Annamalaiyar, is located on the foothills of Annamalai hills in Tamil Nadu. With a long history that includes the presence of the Pallavas, the Medieval Cholas, the Later Cholas, Hoysalas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Carnatic kingdom, Tipu Sultan, and the British, the town is built around the temple which is one of the largest temple complexes in South India. The town is dominated by the Annamalai hill in the north that serves as a backdrop for the temple, and is considered sacred by the people.
Apart from its religious and cultural significance, Tiruvannamalai has an elaborate network of temple tanks. Largely ignored in the present context, these tanks collected water from the hill and brought it to the temple and the rest of the town. Recent research has shown a distinct relationship between the development of the town, the temple, the hill and the tanks, particularly from the environment perspective. As was the norm in historic settlements, the tanks were constructed with due consideration of the topography, geology and natural surface drains. It has resulted in a rather distinct pattern of the historic water system that will be presented to the students.
Along with the response to the environment, there is a socio-cultural relationship that is deeply embedded in the architecture for water. This workshop intends to investigate this relation between the built form of the tanks of Tiruvannamalai and its socio-cultural context through research and documentation. At the end, the students will also be encouraged to present ideas for the regeneration of selected tanks and the reconstruction of the site.
The students will learn about the historical infrastructure systems for urban environments and their relation to the environmental, social and cultural contexts.
The workshop will open up for the students a way of thinking of infrastructure and indicate the paradigm shifts that have occurred in the way people have dealt with water and its expressions in the built environments.
Documentation of the tanks will contribute to the building of resources for analysis of Indian history, as well as contribute to a future potential for their revival.
The students will learn to work as a group for research.

Design method
The design is being developed on the basis of an analogue model with the aid of drawings, and through conceptual representations in various scales under special consolidation of the design of the space with light, forms, colour, and material. Analyses, lectures, workshops and excursions accompany the design programme. Brief constructive works guide through the task and constitute a framework and support through to the elaboration of the design work.
Degree of elaboration/judgement criteria
Elaboration of a scenario, fundamentals analysis, development of a space programme and representation of a sustainable design concept under special consideration of the landscape, urban, material and social conditions. The project is to be developed in the form of analogue models.
