Tarp. The Airport_city Research Project is concerned with the area of the Airport City Vienna.
The Vienna International Airport VIE is an important traffic hub for Eastern Europe and the Middle East. It is the biggest employer in the eastern region. The Airport City houses an office park with office and conference areas, infrastructure establishments and several hotels. Small design teams will be posing questions about the location and will be together elaborating strategies to reconsider the work and recreation space. Spatial interventions are to analyse and discuss part of the area that is prototypical for the Airport City Vienna. The research project is supported by the Airport AG, the results are subject of the decision of a jury, they will be documented and publicly presented in early 2018. The prize money for all the awarded projects amounts to 3,000 EUR.
Rapidly growing cities are characterised by diverse surroundings. Distances, traffic networks and infrastructures are increasingly important for location decisions. Rapidly changing conditions of work, new forms of ¿working together¿ and new occupational fields also condition other forms of relaxation and recreation. The Airport City Vienna has to react to these changes and allow the utmost flexibility as regards its future development and usage emphases. In the process, the Vienna airport is assuming an important role as location developer and innovative engine of the region.
Airport City Vienna
The Vienna International Airport VIE with 70,000 passengers dispatched daily (23 million passengers in 2016) is Austria¿s international traffic hub. It is the location of more than 230 enterprises with over 20,000 employees, thus the biggest employer in the region, and it is confronted with all problems of a medium-sized city. The development of the airport as a multi-functional Airport City is an essential part of the airport strategy. With a commercial area of more than 140,000 m2, office and conference facilities of 110,000 m2 (inclusive Office Park 4), various local amenity and service establishments such as supermarkets, a pharmacy, a fitness centre, a 24/7-post partner and many more, the best preconditions to develop the Airport City are already present.
Research
Tarp working groups are researching design criteria that can be derived among others from the location, its conditions, the factors of work and leisure time. 2050, a development period of 33 years, serves as a working hypothesis to define future development. The aim is to generate new urban space interventions, which facilitate first impulses for an upgrade of the existing building development and at the same time results in an increase in the residential quality of the site. A vision is being sought that is highlighted and examined in the detailed analysis at a selected location. The space in front of the enterprise headquarters of the airport in Office Park 1 will serve as a field for experimentation.

Design method
The design is being developed on the basis of an analogue model with the aid of drawings, and through conceptual representations in various scales under special consolidation of the design of the space with light, forms, colour, and material. Analyses, lectures, workshops and excursions accompany the design programme. Brief constructive works guide through the task and constitute a framework and support through to the elaboration of the design work.
Degree of elaboration/judgement criteria
Elaboration of a scenario, fundamentals analysis, development of a space programme and representation of a sustainable design concept under special consideration of the landscape, urban, material and social conditions. The project is to be developed in the form of analogue models.
