Aim of course

City and courtyard

The civic court combines urbanism and architecture in symbiotic way. In all its characteristics, in different cultures and ages the courtyard has been a manifestation of public or private space. The network of surrounding houses is the treshold between outside and inside - in which the inside is a kind of outside that is no real outside.

The design concept will be embedded within an ideal figure of urbanity. First of all it is a study in housing, in urban density, with courtyards linked together and groundfloor-areas dedicated to public needs. Most important is the spacial quality and concept of facade as the main element of the architectonic design. The urban blocks are devided into sections, so that each student is working on her/his own type of courtyard. The combination of all projects creates at the end the idea of city.

Adrian Meyer

Subject of course

The design-process will be supported by lessons on mass, tectonics and typology. Concepts, sketches and mockups in different scales are focus of method. The final tribute will be an urban area combining all models of all courtyards as composition in 1:100. An idea of city, as in real life - destined by tension, harmony and violation, based on agreements  and conventions.
